“Why would you try; you might fail and end up looking stupid.” Those words have the potential to be burned into our subconscious like a non-writeable dvd. Each morning when our feet hit the ground, the power button gets turned on and the brain kicks into action, taunting us by whispering ancient, crusted worthless lies.
One thing we battle almost every day is a powerful, invisible false belief system that is steering us off course for what God designed for our life. This false belief system is a deeply ingrained habit of seeing the world through a set of lenses that was formed by our perception and interpretation of external events and words. These influences came from our parents, neighbors, siblings, teachers and other people that were part of our day to day activities. They are false because most of them are manmade rules and perceptions and they don’t line up with God’s truth for how we were designed to live.
I have been working with women and mentoring them for almost 20 years, and some of the lies that drive us may sound something like this:
1. I can’t help the way I am.
2. If I feel something it must be true.
3. Everyone is more important that me.
4. If I don’t finish a task or project, I will not have failed.
5. Nobody every listens to me.
6. If my circumstances were different, I would be different.
….and many, many more. Those words in our heads are the script that motivate our choices, determine our reactions, shape our relationships and drive us through our days.
You and I may have been defined by those lies, but we are designed by a God that created the orchids, whales, orange hibiscus flowers, the humming birds, and the California redwood trees. God gave us a world that is so beautiful that at times it leaves us breathless.
“For we are God’s masterpiece, created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10 NIV). Listen, we are not just a tree, or fish or plant…we are His Masterpiece. We are a stunning piece of art, the work of a genius, the chief work of an artist; the creator of all the planets and stars.
So what do we do with the lies that keep reminding us how stupid, weak and worthless we are? WE RESCRIPT!
We don’t allow our social calendars, emotions or other people drive our bus. When the alarm goes off in the morning, we start the day with a solid plan based on God’s truth about who you are and then actively and powerfully pursue the day. We tell God our struggles, give Him our hopes and dreams, consider our agenda for the day and embrace it with joy, determination and purpose.
Now you and God are driving the bus; not some worthless, whacked out lies we heard in the playground; or from a mean aunt, teach or neighbor that never knew about a God who loved them. You know different-you know the truth.
